I have been asked how I made the hidden cowling mounts. It is all done with piano hinges, with a minimum of exposed components. The cowl comes off simply by pulling 5 hinge pins: 2-sides, 1-top, 2-bottom.
Download a crude Google SketchUp detail of the side vertical hinge half on the firewall, upper right side. It attempts to illustrate the engine mount bracket, the firewall side of the hinge, and the hinge pin. (For best rendering of this in SketchUp, uncheck View / Edge Style /Display Edges) [Get Google SketchUp and viewer]
Note are that the hinge hole does not actually fully clear the mount bracket edge. Instead, the design depends on having the pin snake slightly inward. The pin can do this snaking move because:
It takes a bit of fishing and twisting to get the pin started down the hole, but once started, it pushes right in.
I used extruded hinges. Started with rolled hinges, but they did not hold up.
I hope to post more detail drawings (I am slowly learning CAD drawing) and/or
pics of the complete system.
